Pinned by Cupid: Pinterest Showered With 200 Million V-Day Posts

The season of love is upon us again - and this time, it has seemingly set its sights on one of the world’s largest image-sharing social media platforms.

Pinterest users really seem to be readying themselves for an exciting weekend ahead, if the most recent Pinterest user data is any indication. On top of Valentine’s Days posts becoming, unsurprisingly, one of the hottest topics on the social media platform — coming up to about 200 million relevant posts as of today — the variety of the posts is also interesting.

The V-Day pins aren’t just mushy quotes, heartwarming photos, or timeless expressions of love, though — some of them are even scientific in nature! These scientific expressions of love (mostly in the form of experiments for Valentine’s Day) have become quite popular, registering a staggering 300 percent increase compared to last year.

The pins that proved to be the most popular posts for this year’s V-Day season turned out to be those that showed images with recipes and procedures, such as pins explaining how to create love potions and crystal hearts. Even better, these experiments aim to instill increased enthusiasm and a sense of wonder about the sciences, both in kids and adults alike.

All in all, the 200 million posts for the season came from an estimated 29 million pinners. This number is based on statistics from the social media giant itself. For businesses and adults, the most frequented topics were about “falling in love” and recipes for the most romantic dinners. Moreover, approximately 12 million followers have also contributed around 58 million Valentine’s Day searches for categories such as “Valentine’s Ideas” and “Valentine’s Day crafts,” pointing out that the holiday isn’t just for school activities.

The social media site also shares tips for businesses who wish to take advantage of Valentine’s Day, using different holiday-themed crafts, creative and romantic dinner recipes, and other pins targeting a specific audience.

Why these matters (of the heart) matter

This newly observed trend will be very helpful to marketers, since this will give them unique ideas on how to effectively market to people during the season. Businesses and marketers can also benefit from this surge of Valentine’s posts on the platform, as they stand to gain insight on which kinds of presents and seasonal items are popular with users online.

Pinterest has always been the go-to site for many internet users who seek a virtual “mood board.” The categories on the site range from art to photography and even cars. For this year, the current trends include DIY photo prints, brunch at home, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) projects, and educational activities, just to name a few. Of course, in this particular situation, all of these categories point to a single holiday - Valentine’s Day.

Future (P)insight

Upcoming trends on Pinterest for 2016 are, for lack of a better word, quite extraordinary. Case in point: this year, expect to see more business-friendly pins that include awareness for jiu-jitsu, the use of coconut oil, and even the very popular “creative outlet” for adults these days - adult coloring books.
